8 hours in Amsterdam

8 hours in Amsterdam

On a particularly cold morning in late January I got off the train to Schiphol one stop early to explore the historic city centre of Amsterdam and finally meet my very very very long-time blogging friend Bas from The Dirty Velvet. We were leaving for Edinburgh that night, but since our plane took of late in the evening I decided to come to Amsterdam early and enjoy a day in the city. I was going to pay for a train ride to Amsterdam anyway, might as well use it wisely! Two birds, one stone. It was below zero and I&…

A day in Middelburg

A day in Middelburg

Ah, The Netherlands! I just spend a day in Amsterdam with Bas from The Dirty Velvet, but first let me tell you more about Middelburg. Being the capital of the province of Zeeland, this city could not be missing in my #GOINGDUTCH series. Zeeland is starting to become well-known territory for me since my parents bought a caravan there in 2014. I’ve so far covered Yerseke and Veere on the blog and I’ve also been to Vlissingen and Goes (but did not document those visits). Middelburg is a very compact city, with every attraction being located within …

A day in Veere

A day in Veere

Veere, not even that far from Yerseke, is a beautiful small town in Zealand. Typical Dutch houses adorn the cobbled streets, the Great Church and city hall tower above the trees and the many terraces offer ideal seats for people watching. And there’s plenty to see, as you’ll discover after the break point! We started our day on the lake. We (my mom, dad, sister and I) toured around the Veerse Meer, a lagoon separated from the North Sea by the Delta dam, and enjoyed the many beautiful views over the fields, campsites and other small …

Yerseke: Mussels, But Not From Brussels

Yerseke: Mussels, But Not From Brussels

On July 16th, The 2014 mussels season was festively opened in Yerseke, and guess who was there? Me, my family and an awful lot of camera crews. Because mussels are a big thing in La Belgique and The Netherlands, and if they are ready for the harvest you’ll know it as soon as you switch on the news. My mom absolutely hates them, but my dad and I love them and therefor a visit to “mussel capital” Yerseke had been on our to-do list for years. We begged and pleated …

This Summer, We’re Going Dutch!

This Summer, We’re Going Dutch!

I lovingly call her “The beast”. It’s big. Growing up, my grandparents had a caravan like the one in the photo in the Ardennes. 16 summers have I spent there, and I remember well all the friends I made on their campsite. We used to gather with the entire family and have big barbecues and go for long hikes in the endless surrounding woods. When I was 12, my parents bought a caravan of their own. A small one that could be hooked up with our car and for a year we traveled our tiny country, but eventually …
