I’ve been secretly coming to Antwerp since I was about 14. I took the bus to school and on Wednesdays we always had half the day off. The bus to the city left right across from my bus home. I always lied that a friend was with me, but in reality I was often taking the one hour bus ride on my own. My mom would kill me if she knew. In the beginning I’d wander around the shopping street. They had the biggest Zara I had ever seen and as my parents gave me a small clothing budget every season, I’d spent hours browsing the racks. We’re 7 years later now, and I am starting to know the city like the inside of my pocket. This winter we went to the city to follow a college lecture there, and right behind the building lay hidden, a small garden with a lot of bare trees and sand boxes. It looked quite sad and abandoned at first, but on a sign were pictures of a beautiful Magnolia tree and lot and lots of flowers. Last weekend, the day after prom, K and I went to the market to buy fresh fruits and I suddenly remembered the garden. It wasn’t far from where we were so we went to check. Ya shoulda seen me. Like a kid in a candy store. Or in the land of Oz if you like. Everything was, though fading, still in full bloom and the magnolia tree was looking majestic in the center of the garden. Bees were buzzin’ and butterflies were flying everywhere. Aaah, so dreamy!
